Caring for a lonely adult or ill in Bulgaria is a luxury or an impossible task. The traditional model in our country leaves children to take care of their parents or sick relatives. Typically looking for: individual negotiation with a medical practitioner, accommodation in a private or state nursing home, a hospice, a day center, etc.
The shortage of elderly homes is one of the biggest problems for the social sphere. There are two or more years of accommodation in such a state institution. Many Bulgarians have no opportunity to look after their elderly parents. Migration to large cities and abroad to look for work for people of working age is a serious motive for such a solution. Everyday engagements in work and family, responsibility for raising and educating children, ensuring financial stability and security for family and home, and others create prerequisites for adults to feel abandoned by their relatives, to live in loneliness, without care and support, without means for treatment and coverage of elementary needs. Bulgaria ranks first in the EU with the least old-age homes for adult housing and services, and the need for it has been growing rapidly in recent years.
