Description

The Eighth Scientific Conference with International Participation "Geography, Regional Development and Tourism" will be held on 13–15 November 2026 in Shumen, Bulgaria.
A total of 79 scientific papers will be presented in seven thematic sections (Plenary Session, Current Issues in Geographical Research, Physical Geography, Human Geography and Regional Development, Tourism, Geographical Education, and Field Session), together with 15 poster presentations.
The conference will bring together 143 participants, including 108 researchers from Bulgaria, Türkiye, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Serbia, Romania, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Russia. Among them are 37 early-career researchers, PhD students, and postdoctoral researchers. In addition, 30 university students and 5 secondary school students will participate in the conference with oral presentations and poster presentations.
As part of the conference programme, a specialized field session entitled "The Krushuna Karst Geosystem–Structure, Dynamics and Anthropogenic Pressure" will be organized. The initiative is intended for Bulgarian and international researchers, PhD students, and young scientists working in the fields of karst studies, geomorphology, hydrogeography, and the sustainable management of natural resources.
On the third day of the conference, an additional event is planned—a specialized scientific and educational excursion, which represents a natural continuation of the discussions and thematic focus of the Tourism and Human Geography and Regional Development sessions.
During the excursion, participants will visit the Provadia–Solnitsata Archaeological Complex, the oldest known prehistoric salt-production and urban centre in Europe, as well as the medieval Ovech Fortress near the town of Provadia. These sites provide outstanding examples of the interaction between natural resources, historical settlement development, cultural heritage, and contemporary opportunities for sustainable tourism development.
