The HyWatch project offers an innovative solution for monitoring two of the main risks in mixed hydrogen (H) and natural gas transport in metallic facilities – hydrogen embrittlement of the metallic infrastructure and the loss of H through diffusion through the walls of the pipelines. The developed mobile device is mounted directly on the external wall of the facility and allows in-situ monitoring of critical parameters in real operating conditions, without the need to dismantle or interrupt the operation of the facility.
The measurements support the early identification of potential damage and facilitate informed decisions for maintenance and optimization of the facility. The data from the device allow for a quantitative assessment of hydrogen diffusion losses and an indirect determination of the risk of hydrogen embrittlement, which is key to the safety and durability of the infrastructure.
The project aims at patent protection of the method and device, thus contributing to the development of technologies related to the hydrogen economy and the energy transition to green sources, as well as to the more efficient use of the existing gas transmission infrastructure.
